This delicious country sausage gravy recipe is actually quite simple to prepare. It is absolutely wonderful poured over hot biscuits, and you can use the leftovers in my favorite breakfast casserole.

My kids are always begging for "biscuits and gravy, Mom!" and I can understand! I love them too. So creamy and satisfying.

I grew up eating sausage gravy over bread or potatoes or pancakes. My kids only want it over biscuits.

How to make this sausage gravy recipe

Start with frying one pound of sausage. I like the regular or sage flavored, but you can use any kind. Spicy is good too!

When the meat has all been browned, drain off the grease and discard.

Add flour, salt, and pepper to the sausage, and stir well. The flour should coat the sausage crumbles.

Over medium heat, slowly add milk, 1 cup at a time. At first it will clump together -- keep stirring and adding milk.

When it starts to smooth out and not clump together, you can go ahead and add the rest of the milk.

Stir constantly

Stir constantly  while the gravy simmers. Simmer 5-10 minutes, or until the sausage gravy is thickened sufficiently.

If you like thicker gravy, reduce milk by 1 cup, or simmer longer. If you like thinner gravy, add full amount of milk and possibly more.

After milk has simmered several minutes, remove from heat and serve.

Tips for making gravy

To reheat gravy:  Place cold leftover gravy in a saucepan and add 1/2 cup milk.  Place over medium heat and stir until warm.

If you have leftover gravy, use it to make another great breakfast recipe: Hearty Breakfast Casserole.

My classic and delicious biscuit recipe is a must to eat with this gravy: Flaky Biscuit Recipe

I like to use a straight-edge spatula to stir the gravy, to prevent it sticking to the bottom of the pan. You can use a spoon or whisk, but the flat-edged spatula works the best! I really like this small one from Amazon: (affiliate link)

Here's the handy printable - be sure and let me know if you try it!  Or you can pin it for later!
