I love taking rambling, slow walks in the coolness of evening. The days heat has dissipated, and the birds are softly calling to each other as they settle inn for the night. This particular evening I asked my husband to go on a walk with me. He agreed, and we set off. We hadn't gone far when I heard a small voice behind us.
Benefits of Walking with your Husband
Number 1 benefit of walking with your spouse
On the relationship side, we have found it to be very bonding as a couple. Most of the time we take walks without the kids, which allows us to discuss parenting freely. I know there is very strong options on both sides of this fence, but I do believe we need some time together without our kids to discuss our family life, goals, the kids, etc. And it needs to NOT be in bed at night when we are tired and grumpy. We need to do it during daylight hours, when we are fed, relaxed, and not at each other's throats! Walking together promotes just such an atmosphere.
Kids are very important, and bonding as a family is very important. But more important is a Mom and Dad who are unified and getting along with each other. I grew up in a home where my parents motto was "we do everything together" and it was not the answer! They needed to have their dreams and fights in private. Hearing every conversation only gave me anxiety. Now, I admit I was an anxious child, but I think it goes without saying that many children struggle with fear. I certainly was not an exception.

Time to discuss goals
We can also discuss life goals and plans, finances, health problems, etc, without overloading little people who get anxious or fearful. My husband and I are dreamers' and one week we can be dreaming of moving to Alaska and the next, it's Florida! Our kids would be so confused and anxious if they had to try to process all of our half-thought-out dreams each day! They need security, love, and peace. While dreaming wildly impossible dreams is fun for us adults, sometimes it can be overwhelming for young kids.

Promotes a healthy body
On a physical level, walking is such a healthy activity. I believe it is highly under-rated. It gets us outdoors, and that alone is extremely helpful to calm our nervous system and set our circadian rhythm. Watching the sunset, feeling the breeze, hearing sounds of nature, reaching out to pluck a weed or leaf... getting in nature is wonderful for our health. Yes, even in the city! Go to a park and enjoy the beautiful manicured lawns. Or just walk on the concrete sidewalk and feel the fresh air on your cheeks, and watch the clouds overhead.
